Orphan Works

Using copyrighted material for which the copyright owner is unlocatable, is permissible under Fair Dealing, but if we want to use more than what is permitted by Fair Dealing, what is the procedure?

  1. Do a search for the copyright owner to ensure they cannot be found. The library can help with this - contact us.
  2. If you still cannot find the copyright holder, contact the TWU Bookstore to see if the company that creates their print coursepacks can clear the use with Access Copyright.
  3. Apply to the Copyright Board of Canada for a licence that will permit you to use the work.

This Copyright Laws page has more information about using orphan works.
