EBSCO ebooks app

EBSCO eBooks app is available for free for both iOS and Android. Here is a quick overview of the app.

A quick recap of the steps of how to use the app:

1. Download the EBSCO eBooks app from iTunes or Google Play.

2. Find TWU as your home library to access our collection.

3. Tab 'Find Books' menu on the bottom of your screen. Browse or search to find the titles you are interested in.

4. Click on the 'Download' link to download an eBook on the search results page or the browse interface.

5. Log in using your EBSCO personal account credentials. (if you haven't done so, register an EBSCO account here).

6. The title should be displayed in the 'Bookshelf' menu. The remaining loan period for each eBook is shown for each title. (note: the default check-out period for TWU books is 3 hours). The 'Now Reading' menu will take you to the most recent book you were reading.

This tutorial below explains the authentication process when you start using the app.

The Stability of E-Book Collections

TWU Alloway Library's collection of print materials tends to be very stable. Books are only removed when they're outdated, fall outside the range of disciplines being taught at TWU, or are no longer being used by students and researchers at TWU.

E-book collections are different. Most of the 210,000 books we have in our collection from EBSCOhost are rental books in the sense that we don't own the rights to the books. We pay EBSCOhost a yearly fee for access to collections of e-books they've assembled based on agreements they've signed with the publishers of the books in the collections. Because these agreements are not permanent, publishers have the option of pulling their publications out of the collection. When this happens we lose access.

The result is that you may find that an e-book you'd used for your classes in previous years has disappeared from the collection. Unfortunately, there's little we can do to prevent this and our only solution is to purchase a copy of the e-book directly from the publisher. Please contact Infodesk@twu.ca if an e-book you once had access to is now gone and you need it. We may be able to purchase it, especially if it is a course reading.
