Evidence Synthesis: Nursing

Use this guide as a resource for your evidence synthesis research.

Handling search results

Handling search results for a systematic-style search is a three-step process:

  1. Get the search results out of the database and into your email inbox (export search results).
  2. Get the search results out of your email inbox and onto your computer (download, locate, unzip, and save a file).
  3. Get the search results from your computer into your search or reference manager (upload or import search results).

1. Exporting search results from EBSCO databases

The following videos demonstrate how to do a batch-export of large numbers of search results from EBSCO databases (eg. CINAHL, SportDISCUS, PsycINFO). This process is the same for Windows and Mac.

This will give you an RIS file that you can upload into any review manager (eg. RAYYAN, JBI SUMARI) or reference manager (eg. EndNote, Mendeley, Zotero).

This video demonstrates a batch export of search results as an RIS file from an EBSCO database. It ends at the point where you have clicked on the emailed link to download the RIS file.

The RIS file will be zipped (compressed) when it arrives, so you now have to locate, unzip, and save the RIS file. This process is different for Windows and Mac, but in  both cases, DO NOT attempt to open the zipped RIS file.

You only want to locateunzip, and save the RIS file so you can get your search results into your chosen software (eg. EndNote or RAYYAN).

2A. Download exported RIS files

For both Windows and Mac, you'll need to click on the emailed link to download the RIS file to your computer, as shown in the screenshot below.

DO NOT attempt to open the file. If there is a link that says "open file," do not click it. If you accidentally attempt to open the file you will get an error message, so just close that message and proceed to the next step, which is to locate the downloaded file.

2B. Locate, unzip, and save downloaded RIS files [WINDOWS]

LOCATE

For Windows, open your File explorer and go to the Downloads folder to locate the zipped RIS file download.

UNZIP

1. Select the zipped RIS file, then click "Extract all."

2. Click "Extract" on the window that pops up.

SAVE

1. Right-click on the unzipped RIS file to rename it.

2. If you don't already have a sub-folder for your class or project in your Documents folder, make one now. Then, drag-and-drop your renamed, unzipped RIS file into that folder.

3. Upload or Import search results

These are the steps to import search results into EndNote Online.

1. Go to Collect > Import References.

2. Select the file you want to upload.

Ensure your Import Option is set to RefMan RIS.

3. Click "choose file" to select the RIS file you just downloaded from the database and saved to your computer.
